The Maties Athletics Club hosts a Boland League on the 18 February 2012 at the Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium. The event which is scheduled to start at 08:30 is an official qualifier for the ASA Youth, Junior & Senior Championships which take place later this year. The Youth & junior Championships will take place with the SA Schools Championships in Germiston on the 29-31 March whilst the Senior Championships take place in Port Elizabeth on 13-14 April 2012.
With the IPC sanctioning for this event athletes now stand a chance to qualify for the national team which will be announced later this year by the Disability Federation. Dr Suzanne Fereirra who was instrumental in acquiring the IPC sanctioning has indicated that this is a milestone for athletics in South Africa as athletes can now share resources where hosting of quality athletics events is conceerned. This is in line with the agreement reach by the IAAF and the IPC which now ensures that disability athletes can compete at all sanctioned events together with able bodied athletes.

MATIES IN DECANATION TEAM
Athletics South Africa selected a team to compete in the 2011 Decanation Tournament featuring approximately eight other nations in a team competition. Amongst those selected for the competition are Maties AC's Janice Josephs (long jump), Luvo Manyonga (long jump), JK Kruger (Hammer throw) and JF Burger (Polevault).
The athletes will compete in a one day meet on 18 September 2011 in the city of Nice, France.
Luvo Manyonga won the men's long jump at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, with a distance of 8.02m. His nearest competetior only managed 7.86m. A great season for the youngster who continues to collect the accolades at major championships.
Representing South Africa in discus at the All African Games in Maputo, Victor Hogan produced a personal best of 62.60m to collect the silver medal at the All African Games in Maptuto.
Hogan's effort was just 60cm short of eventual winner; Farag of Egypt who threw 63.20m.
Fresh from his Daegu final debut in the 400m hurdles, Cornel Fredericks finished second at the Diamond League in Zurich in what can be described as a consistent season for the youngster.
Cornel produced a 49.12 sec effort to finish behind Trinidad and Tobago's Jehue Gordan after another fast finish. This was Fredericks' first defeat to Gordhan who incidently did not qualify for the Daegu final.
Luvo Manyonga finished fifth in thge mens long jump final. In his first ever senior world championship the young sensation showed great composure to produce an opening jump that placed him in the top three to put the pressure on the field.
This was Manyonga's second best jump ever after his personal best of 8.26m which he produced during the European summer to qualify for the Daegu show-piece.
World number four in the 400m Hurdles; Cornel Fredericks ended his Deagu campaign with a fifth place inish in the men's 400m hurdles final earlier today. Running in his first ever senior World Championships, Cornel produced a series that included a 48,52sec performance in the heats and a 48.83 sec performance in the semi-final.
The twenty one year old kept his cool after two tension filled restarts in a field that included three former world champions, a commonwelath champion and amongst them all two olympics champions.
2010 World Junior Champion Luvo Manyonga qualified for the men's long jump final in a tough qualifying round that saw many top candidates failing to reach the final. Manyonga is scheduled to compete in the final on 2 September 2011.
COrnel Fredericks secured an automatic qualifying spot for the final of the 400m hurdles for men at the IAAF World Championships after a strong run in the home straight that saw him move swiftly past double olympic champion; Angelo Taylor to qualify for the finals on 1 September.
Multi-talented master’s student at Stellenbosch University, Janet Lawless has been selected to represent University Sport South Africa (USSA) at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzen, China. The multi-coded games take place from the 12-23 August 2011.
Lawless is part of the 33 strong Athletics delegation. A former 400m hurdler who switched to the Heptahlon, Janet competes in seven events over two days. She is currently Africa’s number 2 Heptathlete with a silver medal to her credit at last year’s African Championships held in Nairobi, Kenya.
She is the only Maties Athletics representative in the final team after USSA enforced team cuts due to limited funding. The National Lotteries Board sponsored delegation leaves South Africa on 10 August for what is expected to be a spectacular in the Chinese city.

After a slow start to his season Manyonga has proven that his form in 2010 was no fluke and he is anything but a one hit wonder. He is based in Paorlahti, Finland together with coach Mario Smith and Maties team-mates Cornel Fredericks (400H), Sibusiso Sishi (400), Louw Smit (110H) and Shaun de Jager (400).
Other Maties athletes also touring Europe include coach Cyril Lawless and his two athletes Janet Lawless (Heptathlon), Willem le Roux (Decathlon) as well as Wilhelm van der Vyver (100/200 - coaches by Wium Mostert) and Robert Oosthuizen (Jav).
A total of 4 Maties have met Daegu qualification standards with Oosthuizen, Fredericks and Maniyonga achieving A qualification and Janice Josephs with a B qualifier in the women's long jump.
ASA will announce the final team during the first week in August.
Athletics South Africa announced a 36 member final team to the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships which takes place in Lille, France from 6-10 July 2011. Maryke Brits, who was a member of the ASA Team to the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore during 2010 has now been selected to compete in the 100m Hurdles as well as the Long Jump.
With her strong showing at the recent Southern Region Youth Championships where she returned with a gold medal (100m Hurldes) and a silver medal (long jump) it is clear that Maryke remains focussed on producing her best on the World stage. Under the guidance of coach Wium 'Oom Mossie' Mostert Maryke has managed to consistently run sub-14second in the hurdles. She is one of five Boland athletes that will represent South Africa at these championships.

Prof Liz Bressan (Director: CHPS) has indicated that Stellenbosch University will soon launch the service offerings of the system to the sporting community in the next few weeks.
Maties coaches Mohamed Ally, Mario Smith and Joep Loots as well as Stellenbosch Universities Sport Scientists and Engineers are in the process of receiving the training from Prof Christphe Delecluse (Leuven University), Rudi Diels (Belgium National Coach) and Kim Peeters (Business Development Manager: Timetronics Belgium).
The 2011 Edition of the Comrades Marathon which was an "up-run" this year saw a field of 19592 athletes line up at the start in Durban on Sunday, 29 May 2011. Four Maties completed the grueling 89km ultra marathon:
Natalie de Villiers was the first Matie home in a time of 08hrs44min02sec followed by her husband Pierre de Villiers in 09hrs49min21sec. The couple reached an interesting milestone of a dozen (12 medals) comrades marathon finishes with this effort.
They were followed by Theunis de Lange with his 11th comrades marathon finish in a time of 10hrs53min54sec and novice Gideon van der Kolf in a time of 11hrs18min18sec to register his first finish.
Maryke Brits produced a sterling performance over the weekend at the CAA Southern Region Championships in Windhoek; Namibia (Sat, 28 May 2011) to earn two gold medals and a personal best performance. With this the final opportunity to impress the selection panel ahead of the final announcement of the Team to the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille; France, Maryke took the opportunity as she produced IAAF qualification marks in both the 100m hurdles and the Long Jump.
Maryke took her first gold medal of the competition in the long jump with a 5.92m leap and followed up with her second gold in the 100m hurdles with a 13.95sec performance. She made up for the disappointment at the ASA Youth Championships in Germiston where she was forced out of the competition in the hurdles after suffering severe cramps. Maryke finished ahead of the ASA Youth Champion, Shani Bodenstein this time around with both athletes achieving the IAAF qualifying mark.
The athlete now awaits the final announcement of the ASA Team to compete at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille; France from 6-10 July 2011.
Six Maties will be in action this weekend (Sunday, 29 May 2011) in the famous 89km ultra run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in a field of over 19 000 athletes from all over the world.
The Maties athletes that qualified for the 2011 edition are Ross Rutherford, Pierre de Villiers, Theuns de Lange, Gideon van der Kolf, Paul Stephens and Natalie de Villiers.
The Management Committee of Maties Athletics and Maties Sport wishes all Maties A.C athletes well in their 2011 Comrades Marathon adventure.

Maties athletes continued to enjoy success in Track & Field in the past week. With the CAA African Junior Championships taking place in Gaborone, Botswana on 12-15 May 2011 and the IAAF Samsung Diamond League in Shanghai, China on 15 May 2011 there were 5 Maties athletes in international action over the past week.
Robert Oosthuizen has been consistently producing throws over the IAAF World Championships A qualifying standard of 82.00m. Sunday, 15 May was no exception with Robert once again producing an 83.73m throw that saw him finish in 3rd place behind former World Champion Tero Pikamaki (Finland) who won in 85.33m. Robert is a former IAAF World Junior Champion (2006) and has made a great transition to the senior rankings over the years.
On the continental front, our Junior athletes also excelled in Botswana with four Maties athletes representing South Africa at the CAA African Junior Championships. The athletes returned with a Gold medal, two silvers and a 4th place finish. With the local (domestic) season having just come to a close the athletes maintained the form that resulted in their selection.
Rocco van Rooyen who was a finalist at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada started his 2011 season later than usual after picking up a minor injury late last year. Rocco put in a massive 75,72m effort that saw him almost 7m ahead of his nearest competitor and well over his personal best of 74.13m.
Surprise package at the 2011 ASA Senior Championships, Mariska Smit continued her medal winning ways after claiming another silver to add to her collection of medals this year. Mariska cleared 3.35m to share the silver medal spot in the women's polevault. The other silver medal was won by the fast improving young JF Burger who posted a personal best of 4.80m to claim a spot on the podium. Marcelle Du Plessis posted a 1.60m clearance in the high jump for junior women that saw her place 4th.
Team South Africa finished on top of the medal standings with 34 medals in total (13 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze) followed by Ethiopia with 17 medals (6 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze) and in third place Egypt with 11 medals (6 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze).

What a great night it turned out to be for Maties athletes at the Samsung Diamond League in Doha, Qatar last night. Young 400m hurdles sensation Cornel Fredericks arrived in Doha with no major expectation except for his ambition to gain experience on what is regarded by Track and Field athletes as “the circuit”. In the company of Olympic Champions, World Champions and World record holders one can expect to learn quite a bit through exposure among this elite group of athletes.
Fredericks however had his own plan. His desire not to be in awe of his competitors but to stick to his own plan seems to have paid off once again. Cornel produced another superb effort with a 48.43 second run in the 400m hurdles. This his second fastest time of the season is a sign of his consistency as he retains his number 2 ranking on the IAAF World rankings.
It’s still a long season ahead but Fredericks no doubt will absorb as much as he can in this early season stint as he prepares for his first ever IAAF World Senior Championships in Daegu, Korea at the end of August 2011.
The 2006 IAAF World Junior Champion, Robert Oosthuizen is on his way back to his best. Robert has recovered from an injury in 2010 and is now back in form. With a massive last round effort of 84.38m, he moved into second place ahead of (amongst others in the field) Tero Pikamaki and Andreas Thorkilsen.
Robert has had only a few competitions so far this year during the local season and after achieving the IAAF World Championships qualifier he will now focus on his preparation for the CAA African Championships and the IAAF World Senior Championships later this year.

The summary reads as follows; 3 Gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals. This was the total number of medals won by the Boland team at the 2011 ASA Senior Championships held in Durban from 9-10 April 2011. In addition to this 18 year old Mariska Smit (entered as an individual and representing Maties) won a silver medal in the women's Pole Vault.
The day however belonged to one Cornel Fredericks with an impressive 48.14 sec run in the 400m hurdles which is a new Boland record. Running on the outside of the South African record holder Cornel ran his own race and produced a near flawless display of hurdling for the first 7 flights of hurdles before losing ground at the 8th flight. He recovered well to continue the challenge for gold and pushed LJ van Zyl hard to the line but had to settle for silver in a personal best. Cornel had run 48.95 sec in Germiston the previous week which translates to a 0.81 improvement on his previous seasons best.
The performance now places him as the 5th best South African 400m hurdler ever and currently places him 2nd on the World rankings for 2011. The twenty year old Fredericks went on to assist his team-mates to a silver medal in the 4x400m after hauling in the South African 400m champion on the third leg of the men's relay.
Other notable performances included the return to form of Robert Oosthuizen in the mens javelin with a 81.18m victory while Victor Hogan (59.86m) and Janice Josephs (6.38m) retained their titles in Durban.

The ASA Junior Championships in Germiston proved to be the highlight of the season so far in the Athletics calendar. Among those athletes that provided the event with this status were Maties Athletics’ Cornel Fredericks (400m Hurdles), Luvo Manyonga (long jump), Shaun de Jager (400m), Wilhelm van der Vyver (100m), Rocco van Rooyen (javelin), Maryke Brits (100m Hurdles) and Marcelle du Plessis (High Jump).
Cornel was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch over the weekend with a 48.96sec performance in the 400m Hurdles (Under23) that ranks as the second best performance on the 2011 IAAF World Senior Rankings to date. This was Cornel’s first sub-49 second run on South African soil and with a personal best of 48.79 sec he is perfectly positioned to see another personal best performance this season.
World Junior Champion Luvo Manyonga who has consistently jumped over 8m at major competitions once again delivered a spectacular 8.07m jump in atrocious weather conditions to prove that he has the temperament for the big occasion under challenging circumstances.
In the 400m for Under 23 Men the fast maturing Shaun de Jager won in an impressive 46.58sec. Adding to the Maties success were Wilhelm van der Vyver (SA Junior record holder in the 100m) in the 100m for under 23 Men, Rocco van Rooyen defended his SA Junior title with a 71.33m throw in the javelin. Van Rooyen representing Maties at the championships missed out on selection to the provincial team after starting his season late. In the youth girls 100m hurdles, Maryke Brits produced a very fast 13.84sec effort in the heats that saw her elevated to a top 5 standing in the current 2011 IAAF World Rankings for youth athletes. Brits also competed at the first Youth Olympics in 2010 where she finished 8th in the Long jump. Marcelle du Plessis won the Junior women's high jump with a 1.65m. She has consistently jumped over 1.60m this season and is a prospect for the future.
The Maties team comprised of 13 athletes with 10 athletes featuring in finals and a total of 9 top six finishers in finals as well as a gold medal and a silver medal.

With three weeks to go before the ASA Senior Championships Maties Athletes took the opportunity to display their form at the Maties Club Meet on 22 March 2011. On an unusually cool Stellenbosch evening at Coetzenburg, there were some noteworthy highlights both on the Track and in the Field with no less than 36 athletes adding their names to a list of qualifiers for the upcoming ASA Championships.
In the throwing events, Ross Jordaan threw a 18.95m shot that places him as a firm contender for Gold at the ASA Championship as he continues to show signs of returning to excellent form. JK Kruger threw a seasons best 61.28m in the Hammerthrow for men. In the discus, junior sensation Wynand Claasen threw a 49.50m to qualify for the ASA Junior Championships after missing out on the provincial selection. Rocco van Rooyen also qualified in the Javelin event with a 67.82m effort in what is only his first competition since returning from injury.
In the Men’s long jump Luvo Maniyonga jumped a 7.89m while Janet Lawless who is preparing for the CAA African Senior Combined Events Championships produced a 5.77m effort in the women’s long jump. Also returning to the track after a long absence due to illness was 4th place finisher at the 2010 ASA Senior Championships; Dicardo Jacobs who ran a solo 8min48,02sec race in the 3000m steeplechase.

Maties Athletics has withdrawn it's athletes from the Boland Senior Championships at the Dal Josafat Stadium scheduled to take place over the next two days (18/19 March 2011).
Maties athlete's representatives and club coaches indicated a serious concern about the state of the facility in Paarl. After a discussion with Boland Athletics regarding the concerns, the club has withdrawn it's members from the competition.
Anton Faro turned in a superb effort to win the Boland 10km Championships in Worcester on Saturday 12 March 2011 with a time of 31min04sec ahead of his Maties team-mate and training partner Pieter Koopman (31min05sec). Anton has always been in the shadows of the likes of Dikardo Jacobs and Koopman but with his latest performance on what has been described as a challenging course he has established himself as a strong contender on the local road running scene.
In the Junior division, Maties first year student Kane Reilly was the quickest across the finish line with a time of 32min46 sec before losing the title on a technicality (incorrect indication of his Junior status on his running number). Reilly is a versatile athlete having recently enjoyed success in 5000m at the Boland U23 Track & Field Championships. Maties Distance Running Coordinator; Chris Davids believes that distance running is taking a positive turn at the club and with the introduction of the new programs the current crop of athletes have the potential to excel in all areas of distance running.

Cornel Fredericks qualified for the 2011 IAAF Senior World Championships in Daegu Korea with an excellent display of hurdling at the Yellow Pages Series on a cold Thursday (10 March 2011) evening at the Bellville Veladrome. He won his 400m Hurdles race in a time of 49.33 seconds.
On a night that saw some excellent performances by Maties Athletes the highlights included a rare head to head between Maties A.C’s World Junior Champion; Luvo Maniyonga and Olympic bronze medalist; Khotso Mokoena in the Men’s long jump. Maniyonga didn’t have it all his way as he had to fight back to regain the lead from Mokoena. Maniyonga was the victor with the distance of 8.00metres ahead of Mokoena’s 7.97metres.
Maties proved to be dominant in the Long Jump with a dominant 6.26metre leap by the rejuvenated Janice Josephs in the women’s event. Janice fresh from a 6.51metre leap (which is a World Championship B-qualifier) over the past weekend at the Dal Josafat Stadium has set her sights on a spot at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu; Korea later this year.
Other notable performances included a 14.26 second victory for Louw Smit in the men’s high hurdles over his Maties counterpart; Drikus Viljoen who clocked 14.67 seconds. In the women’s 400m hurdles, Maties new-comer Alix Mareillon finished in second place in a time of 60.64 seconds. Mareillon has continued on the good form she displayed during the Yellow Pages Summer Series in December 2010.
In the throwing events, JK Kruger achieved an impressive 61.67metres to take second place in the men’s Hammer throw while Ross Jordaan got a second place finish in the men’s Shot with a 18.26metre effort. Shaun de Jager was third in the 400m for men with a 46.68 second run.
On the final event of the night it was a case of “oh so close” for Maties leading middle distance athlete Jacques Pretorius as he just missed out on the magical dream mile status. With his training partner (Rick Hambridge) taking on the pace-making duties through the one kilometer mark the field was on target for the sub 4 minute mark. In a brave effort Pretorius took on the pace to stay on target in that difficult third lap. Despite his strong finish he had to settle for 3rd place in an agonizingly close 4min00,15 seconds (0.15 sec short of the dream mile).
Maties featured prominently on the night in the sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws and in the middle distance so the future of the club looks good. The next major meet is the Western Cape Students Championships in Bellville on Saturday 12 March 2011.
