Spirit - Siyethemba
...The Interview
What made you join MDS?
I’ve always been passionate about ballroom and Latin dancing, hence I’m a very good fan of Strictly come dancing south African version lol, and i never had an opportunity to do ballroom but when I saw people from the society dancing in the Neelsie I told myself that was an opportunity I couldn't miss. One silly afternoon I recognised one of the dancers I saw on the floor in the Neelsie and I approached that person and she was very kind and sweet to me and she gave me all the details and I was like there is no way I was going to miss the next practise on the following week, and since then I’ve really enjoyed my being in the society AND WILL DANCE TILL THE FLOOR HAS HOLES ON IT .
Why did you apply to join the committee?
I’m a kind of person that believes can do better all the time and having served in the committee for a year already, I thought about how difficult it was for me to adapt to meetings and every social we had as the committee last year since I was the only black person and I told myself race doesn’t mean anything, and serving another year in the committee will help me to be able to except the fact that I’m in Stellenbosch, a place highly dominated by white people and where ever I am I can shine by doing right for the persons that next to me irrespective whether that person is a dancer or not.
What aims/goals do you have for MDS next year?
I speak unity
I want to change the perspective that lots of people have about dancing. I aim to unite everyone from the committee to the society at large by ensuring that we understand each others differences and embrace one another not only on the dance floor but also around campus.
BUILDING A HEALTHY AND A HAPPY FAMILY.
