Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need a partner?
Absolutely not! Most people who join Maties Dance Society do not have a partner to begin with. Because of this you will get to dance with a number of different partners, and this helps to improve your leading and following abilities in dancing.

What clothes/shoes should I wear to dance in?
Be comfortable! Wear something that is cool and that you can move around in.
With regard to shoes, we do have a lady who comes to sell both male and female dancing shoes, but if you don't want to buy these then wear shoes that are comfortable and will stay on your feet - pumps are good for girls, while most guys wear some form of sneakers.

I've danced before, which class should I join?
If you do have some dance experience, please go to the beginners class where you can speak to our coach Gladys and she will place you in the appropriate class for your level.
I missed a class! Am I going to fall behind?
Luckily not. We do understand that sometimes you just can't make it to dancing, so we teach at a pace that does accommodate missing a couple of classes. Even if you miss two in a row, you can still catch up easily if you attend the repeat classes, but we recommend attending as many as you can.

Will we be entering competitions?
The nature of MDS is to be a social society, so generally we are more about having fun and teaching dance rather than winning medals. However, every year we take part (and do extremely well!) in the Intervarsity competition, which allows you to compete in a friendly environment with the other Universities across South Africa.

Can I bring a friend to watch me dance?
Usually we don't mind if you bring your friends along to watch, but out of courtesy please ask Gladys or one of the committee members before doing so.
