The Hortus Botanicus has been supported by the University of Stellenbosch since its inception in 1923. The garden is widely regarded as an open-air laboratory and serves as a centre for training, science, conservation and recreation. For this purpose rare plants have been imported from all over the world, and contact with international students, scientists and botanical gardens is regarded to be as important as establishing a facility that meets the needs of our local community.Today the US Botanical Garden, a mostly undiscovered gem in the historical centre of Stellenbosch, gives joy to all its visitors. The garden is small and compact, but time and again visitors are surprised by the atmosphere and the variety of plants and plant products found here.

Organic and environmentally friendly products unique to Africa can be purchased in the BioBuild Centre (gift shop). In addition to these products many other items are displayed that make visiting the shop an educational experience.The Katjiepiering Restaurant has been upgraded, and besides its interesting menu it also boasts a ‘rainforest patio’ where meals may be enjoyed in an idyllic setting.
