The Botanical Garden serves the University by not only handling the administration, storage, cultivation and provision of plant matter and information for teaching or research purposes, but by also rendering an extremely important service to the broader community in the following ways:
- acting as an open-air laboratory and information centre for school group
- maintaining contact with other local and foreign institutions on information and development in the field of botany
- providing an environment for the practical training of botanists and horticulturist
- impacting on visitors, local and foreign, in such a way that a favourable impression is made and maintained of Stellenbosch and the country
The activities of the garden are managed by a limited staff, loyally supported by regular volunteers who make an invaluable contribution in their respective fields of expertise or interest. Financially the garden is supported by the Botanical Garden Development Fund, which was set up and is being maintained through initiatives such as:
- the Katjiepiering Restaurant
- the BioBuild Shop
- financial contributions by members of the public
