The Confucius Institute is a non-profit public institution that aims to promote Chinese language and culture. Following the successes of Germany, France, Spain and the UK to promote their national languages, China decided in 2004 to do the same by establishing Confucius Institutes all over the globe, and headquarters in Beijing, China. The Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University is located in the Postgraduate and International Office.
It is important to distinguish between the courses and services offered by the Confucius Institute (as non credit-bearing) and those offered by Stellenbosch University, which are indeed credit-bearing. While our academic core are also teaching at the University, the courses listed on our website, are presented at different levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced) and do not contribute to fulfilling degrees. For a list of courses presented by the University, please consult the website of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages.
The Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University (CISU) was established at the end of 2007. Since its inception, the CISU was based at the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University. In 2009 however, it moved its bases to the Postgraduate and International Office.
