The Chinese Language Program was hosted in the Shanghai East China Normal University from 30 June until 16 July. A total of fourteen South African teachers went on the training program. The Stellenbosch Confucius Institute sent the following teachers: Hugo Wilma , Ferrentia September and Zanele Mazani.
A welcoming ceremony was hosted on the first day, after which the teachers were taken to the hotel and booked in. The next day classes started. The classes ranged from language classes, to cultural classes and expeditions to local tourist sites. Paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy painting lessons were held in class. The sites visited included the Shanghai Museum, the Yuyuan Park and the Chenghuang Temple. Topics from greeting to how to tell the doctor what is wrong were covered. The more advanced students were also able to attend classes for people who were already Chinese teachers. The purpose of the program was to get local teachers interested in learning Chinese and becoming Chinese teachers.
After the program a closing ceremony was held, where everyone was given a chance to speak and could listen to the advice of the program instructors.
