CISU attending the 2017 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Africa

The 2017 Joint Conference of Confucius institutes in Africa were held on 18  May in  Lusaka, Zambia under the theme Vocational, Technical training by Confucius Institutes, Cooperation between Confucius institutes and Chinese-funded agencies.  Over 260 international delegates participated in the conference. Those who attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches included Honorable Dennis Wachinga, Zambia's Minister of General Education; Peggy Chirwa, Acting Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Higher Education of Zambia;  Prof Luke Mumba, Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia (UNZA), Prof  Enala Mwase,  Deputy Director General of the Confucius institute Headquarters, Xia Jianhui, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming.

The conference lasted for two days. The two day meeting saw delegates discussed various problems faced by Confucius institutes (CI's) in Africa as well as proposed solutions to these problems.  At the end of the meeting, Xia Jianhui noted that Hanban took note of the many problems faced by CI's in Africa and would look at how to address these problems.  Peggy Chirwa called on Governments and Ministries in CI in Africa to embrace the basic paradigm changes in implementation, administration and mobilisation of the Chinese language and culture. 

Vice-President of Xiamen University Mdm. Zhan Xinli;  Director of the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Office of Confucius Institute Affairs, XMU, Tongwen Mao; Co-Director of Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University on South Africa side, Robert Kotze; and Co-Director of Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University on China side, Fu’ai Jian, also participated in the conference.
