Confucius Institute takes part in Worcester Gymnasium Open Day
On 22 and 23 April 2015, the Confucius institute at Stellenbosch University (CISU) participated in an Open Day hosted by Worcester Gymnasium. Chinese lessons has been offered at this famous school from the beginning of this year. About 800 educators, students from both the primary and high school as well as parents attended the day’s activities.
A new subject at the school, the Chinese Mandarin display stand attracted much attention from students and parents. Lecturers from CISU introduced Chinese language learning to visitors displaying text and story books, charts and other teaching applications. Chinese language learners in Grade 8 introduced the new subject, showcasing their fluent language skills and sharing the joy of learning Chinese.
The CISU provides Chinese lessons to more than ten schools in Stellenbosch. Worcester Gymnasium is a new addition and the first hosting Chinese classrooms in the Worcester area. As a Chinese language teacher in this school, Professor Wang Peiwei from CISU, has done a lot of work to promote Chinese language and culture within the school and Worcester. He is currently teaching 196 students at Grade 8 level. Worcester Gymnasium also plans to introduce Chinese lessons in other grades.
Worcester Gymnasium is a co-educational multicultural dual-medium high school situated in the picturesque Breede River Valley in the Western Cape. At its annual Open Day, associations, sports clubs, etc. gathered in the Auditorium, meeting face to face with students and parents and getting to know them.
The two day event gave students and parents an opportunity to find out basic information about Chinese language and the function of the Confucius Institute. It’s hoped that more learners will understand and learn Chinese in the future.
