We Are the Champion
Delivering a moving performance, Stellenbosch University (SU) student Jasmine Rae Beaudry, impressed judges at the 15th Chinese Bridge South Africa region competition held on 27 May. An amazing speech and talented Chinese performance saw her winning the top prize in the competition.
The Chinese Bridge competition is held every year by one of the five Confucius institutes in South Africa. This year the competition was hosted by the Confucius Institute at Johannesburg. About 25 students from Stellenbosch University, Durban University of Technology, University of Cape Town, Rhodes University and the University of Johannesburg participated. Participants final score depended on their Chinese Knowledge, Mandarin performance and talent show.
Jasmine was not the only SU student who impressed at the competition. Fellow SU students, Bonnie Cape Shapcott and Leanne Robinson shared the third place. As a dream team, they make sure SU won the championship for the seventh year in a row.
Seven years we help our students tell their life story, and chasing their Chinese dream, by the time they use it to express themselves, it’s not a simply foreign language anymore. Like Jasmine said, “I want to keep studying Chinese and try to make a movie telling the amazing stories which I have heard from my grandmother.”
