Ms Marina Joubert

Marina Joubert is a science communication researcher and lecturer at CREST, with a particular interest in the factors affecting scientists’ participation in public science communication and engagement.  After working as a science communication manager and consultant for two decades she joined Stellenbosch in January 2015 where she launched the first online course in science communication in Africa. To date, more than 120 science communicators from across the African continent has enrolled for and completed this course.
Marina serves on the scientific committee of the global PCST (Public Communication of Science and Technology) network and the editorial board of Science Communication, as well as the editorial board of the online, open access Journal of Science Communication.
In July 2015, she won the National Science and Technology Forum Award for “An outstanding contribution to Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI) in South Africa over the past five years in the Category: Communication for outreach and creating awareness of SETI”.
She holds a BSc Food Science (Honours) degree, as well as a Journalism (honours) degree from Stellenbosch University, as well as an MSc (Agric) from University of Pretoria. She is currently studying towards a PhD in science communication at Stellenbosch University, focused on communication behaviour of South African research leaders.
