News, January 2015

Students from across Africa and even further afield – 87 in total – are currently enrolled for a 6-week fully online course in science communication at CREST. The course ran from 19 January to 28 February 2015, with a practical assignment due by mid-March.

The online materials consist of course notes, video clips, graphics, downloadable research articles and a very active online forum where participants ask questions and debate issues.

“The course is designed to introduce people to theory and research trends in science communication, while also giving them new knowledge, skills and creative tools that they can use in their everyday work environments,” explain course designer and presenter Marina Joubert. “I am delighted and encouraged by the feedback from participants about the relevance and usefulness of this course, and their interest to learn more and delve deeper into the science behind science communication.”

Most participants work in communication and media offices at universities, research councils and NGOs where they are catalysts and bridge builders between high-level science and diverse interest groups, including local communities.

Due to popular demand the course will be offered again towards the end of 2015. Email marinajoubert@sun.ac.za if you would like to be notified about future science communication training courses.
