Physical geography (also known as geosystems or physiography) is the branch of science that deals with the study of processes and patterns in the natural environment. It is one of the two major subfields of geography, the other being human geography.

Urban geography is the study of urban areas with specific regards to spatial and relational aspects and theories. That is the study of areas which have a high concentration of buildings and infrastructure.

Environmental geography describes the spatial aspects of interactions between humans and the natural world with its landforms and cycles. It requires an understanding of the physical dynamics of the earth as well as the ways in which human societies conceptualize the environment.

Climatology is the study of climate, scientifically defined as weather conditions averaged over a period of time. It is a branch of the atmospheric sciences.

Tourism Geography is the study of travel and tourism, as an industry and as a social and cultural activity which impacts on the environment. Tourism is an activity in which both place characteristics and personal self-identities are formed, through the relationships that are created among places, landscapes and people.

Economic geography is the study of the location, distribution and spatial organization of economic activities across the Earth. The subject matter investigated is strongly influenced by the researcher's methodological approach.

A Geographic Information System (GIS) includes mapping software with tools that allow users to create interactive queries, analyze spatial information, edit data, maps, and presents the resultant data that is linked to location.

Development geography is the study of the Earth's geography with reference to the standard of living and quality of life of its human inhabitants.

| At the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Stellenbosch, we conduct research and teach students about social and biophysical systems and the events that shape the world in which we live. Our focus is on understanding these dynamics with a special emphasis on human-environment interactions as well as the science and the technologies that are needed to analyze, model, and visualize geographic processes. We invite you to browse our site and find out more about the programmes we offer and current research projects conducted by the Department. We appreciate feedback so please feel free to
