Tourism Geography

studies tourism and travel, as a cultural and social activity and as an industry. The economic, environmental and sociocultural impacts of tourism upon destinations are examined, with a consideration of ways in which planning can assist in the regulation of development and produce more responsible forms of tourism.

Environmental Geography

as subdiscipline focus on the nexus between on the one hand the physical environment with its attribute resource capacities, delicate sensitivities and its vulnerabilities and on the other hand the human environment with its interactive development demands, problems and impacts and the management requirements generated by this interaction.

Urban Geography

Urban Studies encourages students to learn about cities as historical, social, cultural, economic, and political phenomena within a spatial context aiming to find solutions to seemingly intractable problems. The focus is mainly on the spatial transformation of the South African city. Special attention is given to small town developmental challenges.

Geographical Information Technology

is concerned with the processing geographical data to address problems related to geography. It involves collecting, manipulating, analysing and presenting spatial data using geographical information systems (GIS), earth observation (remote sensing) and global navigation satellite systems.

The CGA specializes in the application of satellite remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS) and other geographical-analytical techniques for research and training purposes.

The mission of the Centre for Regional and Urban Innovation and Statistical Exploration (CRUISE) is to add value to the local and international pool of knowledge in the field of urban and regional systems analysis and to disseminate this knowledge through its programmes of research and education.

DiMP

The Disaster Mitigation for Sustainable Livelihoods Programme (DiMP) was established in 1996 and at Stellenbosch University from 2011. Since its inception, DiMP has introduced disaster risk-related post-graduate programmes and generated numerous publications. DiMP particularly focuses on urban risk, as well as hydro-meteorological threats and fire.
