Internet Tariff change...

As of 1 February 2010, new Internet Tariffs and Timeslots will be implemented. The Internet will be faster and in some cases it will be cheaper. The official Tarif document is available here.

e-Registration...

Students have to have successfully completed e-Registration before they will be able to load printing quota, register private computers. Students who were at the Main Campus in 2009 (Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy) should re-register before requesting to be moved to Tygerberg Campus.

Cellphone Bans

The use of cellphones in CUAs (Computer User Areas - RGAs in Afrikaans) is strictly prohibited! Information Technology after lengthy consideration and debate with all roleplayers have decided to ban the use of cellphones within CUAs and other high-risk areas.

In a nutshell this means that although you may bring the cellphone itself into the area, it must be switched off. It may not be on Silent, Discrete or Vibrate-only mode, but physically switched off!
Any student or personnel member caught using a cellphone within GERGA (especially during exams) will be given an immediate spot fine of R50. Repeat offenders will be banned from using GERGA.
The only people permitted to have or use active cellphones are designated IT personnel and the CUA manager and his/her staff. They might require the use of cellphones for troubleshooting, networking and PC problems with outside technicians and are often on 24-hour standby needing the use of cellphones. GERGA personnel now have digital cordless telephones which do not interfere with the network communications

GERGABlog

Don't forget to visit the GERGABlog. It is filled with useful bits of information that can be used by student and personnel alike. It is primarily aimed at the e-Learning environment and is intended to make the e-Assessments, and the use of computers in the Health Science environment easier. Interactivity is encouraged with comments and contributions by personnel and experts in various fields! Pay the blog a visit!

Accessing GERGADOCS...

There are a lot of your class notes and material available outside of WebCT. These are available in 2 places: The GERGADOCS server (for those of you within the university network but without needing Novell to login) and "My Network Folders" for those outside the university but requiring your Novell username and passwords to login. Make use of them both according to your needs!

Printing Problems?

There are a few checkpoints to go through should you be unable to print at GERGA, and instead of treating the printer like a vending machine, try going through the list. Click on the to expand the checklist.

The Checklist...

Have you loaded print quota?
If you have loaded print quota, have you not by accident loaded it on the Main Campus network? (SUNET_TREE) Quota should always be under TYGERBERG_TREE if printing from GERGA.
Does your "View Printer Credit Balances" in the User Administration page show a positive print quota?
Is there paper in the printer and if so are there any red warning lights flashing or is there an error message being displayed on the printer?
Is your document the correct size? It must be A4!
Are you printing from WebCT or directly from Word or Powerpoint? The latter gives better results!
Is someone else perhaps printing a large document to the printer and you are sitting behind them in the printer queue?
Is the correct printer selected in the Printing Properties?
Are you logged in to the network with your student number? You can only print out if you are logged in with your own name.

Where are the links?

Tools like adding and administering Printing Quotas, Internet Usage and Password administration have been moved to the Tools page. (in the middle of the top tool bar of this page) Some are also duplicated in the menu on the right of this page.

There is currently a world-wide shortage of memory chips used in flash-disks. This has resulted in delays in delivery and a small increase in pricing. We currently have only very limited stock so please call or e-mail to check before ordering or collecting.

Kingston MobileLite

Kingston MobileLite 9-in-1 USB card reader: R130 (VAT incl.) [was R92]

These are NOT flash drives and have no memory. They read the memory cards and act as adapters for USB ports! There are some issues with the MobileLite cardreaders reading Sony Memorystick cards. This problem ONLY manifested itself with the Memorystick cards from Sony-Erikson cellphones and some Sony digital cameras. In the case of the cameras the MobileLite will allow you to read the data but not change or download data to the card.

If you want to buy a flash drive, we do have very limited stock. Call us first to order a flash drive. Then just go to the cashiers on the 1st Floor of the Clinical Building, specify the type and size of flash drive you want and pay in the amount in cash. (Unfortunately we cannot put flash drives on student accounts.) We will then contact you to bring the receipt to the GERGA office and collect your flash drive.

University Departments wishing to purchase from GERGA may do so. Call us first to order a flash drive, then create an Interdepartmental requisition for cost point 6427 (OE) and bring the requisition printout with you when collecting.

We keep very little stock and any given moment, as the price fluctuations are pretty drastic, but we will put you on a waiting list and inform you when the stock arrives! (5-10 days) Always call us first when placing the order so we can get the stock for you before you arrive to collect! The prices listed above are always kept at that level for as long as possible to ensure the best possible deal for you.
