Tygerberg United for God … and united we shall stand.

On the evening of the 9th of May the TSS was packed with students fired up to worship God; so packed in fact that even more chairs had to be fetched to seat the number of people streaming in.

The night kicked off with singing, dancing and insane worship with the Hillsong band leading the choir. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” and freedom there was. The atmosphere just shifted with the freedom to praise God. The enthusiasm and energy of the band really inspired everyone to freely worship ‘out of the box’.

Shawn Basson from Kingdom Light Ministries had the opportunity to speak and delivered an amazing message. We love God because He loved us first. We are the chosen generation, His most beloved children. Our father is the God father, King of kings, Lord of lords. Looking at Him, we are transformed into the same image by the Spirit living within. Let us start living from Him, let Him love through us, because we are the only heaven some people will see.

The night ended off with another round of epic worship. “Giving it all away, away. Giving it all, to go your way.”
Massive things are happening on campus. God has really blessed Tygerberg and a wave of change has been coming for a while now.

Dit was weer daardie tyd van die jaar waarna almal al lank uitsien aangesien die wag langer was as gewoonlik tot die groot event. Van die beste skandes, memories en pelle is gemaak – ‘n ander tipe lekker!

Die perfekte gemoed is geskep nadat die Medies rebels gedomineer het teenoor Wilgenhof op die rugbyveld. So van half nege af het die mense begin in stroom en die manne agter die bar het redelik gedans om dié se dors te les. (En die HTB chicks wat net dubbels drink). Die melktertjies was ‘n groot gunsteling tesame met die punch wat vroegaand al op was.

Alhoewel daar nie regtig kos bedien was nie, was daar steeds goed geëet by die geleentheid en ‘n paar uiterste gevalle is ook gerapporteer insluitend ‘jar/senior’-, lift- en waskamergevalle. Die goeie weer het ook ‘n paar safari avonture toegelaat.

Daar was ongelooflik lekker gekuier en mens kan nie anders as om trots te wees op so ‘n aand nie! Baie dankie vir die mense wat moeite gedoen het en betrokke was by die reëlings, skoonmaak en lekker maak van die spoggeleentheid. ‘n Goeie standaard is gestel vir die volgende Hippo kuier!

Die Woensdag wat nou verby is, het die manne van Hippokrates deur geskiet na Stellenbosch om saam met die lieflike dames van Huistenbosch ‘n aangename glasie wyn te geniet.

In Huistenbosch se voortuin is die wynglase opvevul sowel as weer leeg gesluk terwyl nuut gevonde vriendskappe ontkiem het. Oud en jonk het saamgekom oor die gemeenskaplike liefde vir ‘n gesellige glasie wyn.

Die dames van Huistenbosch het die ekstra myl gegaan en seker gemaak Hippokrates tuis voel deur dat hulle ‘n spesiale drankie in spuitnaalde bedien het.

Dit was ‘n wonderlike aand saam met opregte dames en Hippokrates sien uit na die vriendskap wat uit hierdie skakel gaan blom.

Being on any kind of social media, you would have noticed that your newsfeed would be riddled by Tygerberg’s student interns’ finishing their first set of exams. Indeed, after five and a half years of studying, seeing many friends, brothers and sisters, and perhaps even nieces and nephews receiving degrees, jobs, and pay-cheques. After witnessing all the other people investing in all of the great things you would expect of the working (and actually getting paid) life, our SI’s have crossed the first mountain to knock the first of two nails into their coffins of unemployment.

But this is no easy affair. Not only did it take five and a half years of their lives, but clearly some deal of commitment, some substantial sacrifice and unyielding determination. There were definitely always some ups and downs.

After a few interviews, a trend was seen on the things some SI’s wish they rather did:
• You will always forget some work. Try to get a set of notes that you can fall back on as a foundation. Do this by making your own summaries so that you can whip through them later.

• Try to study an Internal Medicine module (Cardiology, Gastro etc.) every year after 2nd year. You will appreciate this when you become a Student Intern.

• Watching series steals your time. Discipline yourself to only watching one episode at a time.

• Sleep is under-estimated

• Study hard. When you are in ward rounds, you cannot just pass on a consultant question anymore.

Rebels picking up where they left off

Medies Rugby started their 2013 Sauer campaign by beating Majuba by 39 points to 17.

In a game where the Medies Rebels were never firing on all cylinders, the men from Tygerberg managed to outscore Majuba by scoring 6 well worked tries. The game was a lot tighter than the scoreboard suggests and credit has to be given to Majuba for their fighting spirit, a team which can improve immensely when their fitness is up to scratch.

A whole new team was fielded for the first game of the season as a lot of players were recalled to their Maties teams following the Varsity Cup and the SI’s had their midyear exams. Nevertheless, the Rebels came to the field with only one thing in mind: 5 log points.

The game started off with the Medies flyhalf, Johan du Preez, exchanging some tactical kicks to test their opponents. A couple of minutes of hard rugby followed till Medies was awarded a penalty in their half. Andrich Arlow casually stepped up for Medies and slotted the penalty.

Medies continued to maintain the pressure and pushed Majuba until their backs were against the wall and back into their own half. Keeping the host pinned in their quarters, Medies was awarded a penalty and captain Le Roux Viljoen asked for the scrum. A set move from the scrum saw the unsung hero, Jurgens Terblache, humiliate Majuba’s defense and score under the posts. Arlow missed the conversion.

A lapse in concentration lead to Majuba building multiple phases and push into Medies’ quarter. Close quarter defense around the rucks was a real headache for Medies. Regular starting flanks were absent, Matthew Markram (fractured maxilla), Duncan Havenga (Final year exams) and Attie Oberholster (strained knee ligament), and Medies’ defensive lines were clearly not on par. Majuba broke through easily and were on the board. The conversion was missed.

Straight from the kickoff Majuba looked to be threatening again. With a 3 man overlap in the Medies half, Majuba threw a long pass and PJ le Grange managed to make a intercept. An 80 meter sprint saw PJ get on the scorecard. The try was converted by Arlow.

The kickoff followed and again the two flyhalves were having at each other with tactical kicks. Majuba underestimated the speed of right wing Jaco Visagie. Jaco ripped the disorganised defence apart and ran 60m to score following a poorly chased kick. Arlow missed the conversion.

Another lapse in the defense saw Majuba again breaking the defensive lines of Medies. Medies seemed unable to tackle the players of Majuba back. A succesful conversion followed after Majuba set up multiple phases and eventually they scored from a pickup and drive.

Half Time followed with a score of 20 points to 12 in favour of the Home team.

Strong words were spoken at half time by the new Medies coach, Matthew Markram.

These words were of little effect as Majuba scored shortly of the kickoff. Medies appeared to be shell shocked and could not get going. Again their defense raised eyebrows and a score of 20-17 left a few spectators very nervous.

This was the last time that Majuba crossed the whitewash of Medies and it was only till the last 10 minutes of the game that Medies could break the deadlock. Medies’ fitness was unparalleled on the day and it saw Medies scoring 3 more tries in the dying minutes.

A set piece from a line out lead to Jurgens Terblanche threaten their try line once again. Quick and clean ball to Le Roux Viljoen gave him the chance to give one more pass to give Medies’s enforcer, Louis van Wyk, the easiest of run-ins.

Medies was especially good on the counter-attack. Replacement flyhalf George Wolfaardt kept pushing the visitors to their flyhalf with monster kicks. Bad returning kicks lead to Jaco Visagie’s second try as a good counter attack by Piero Saieva gave Visagie a small outside gap. Visagie took it and it saw him end up under the posts once again. Lourens Wahl converted the try with a dropgoal out of hand.

With a minute to go, Majuba knocked the ball in open play. Replacement lock, Ruan “Langman” van Staden, picked up the ball, pulled up his shoulders and went for the try line. After running nearly 40 meters, Van Staden gave a skilfully executed pass to his lock partner, Louw Naude. Naude crossed the line to score the final try for Medies. Saieva stepped up and converted the try.

Medies displayed excellent character when beating Majuba on Friday. With practices disrupted by SI’s wrtiting exams, the younger players stepped up and showed their true colours.

Young faces such as Gerhard Steenkamp, Piero Saieva and Johan “Stiffie” du Toit will definitely ensure that this will be another interesting year for the Medies Rebels

Music really does make ‘the people come together’

The car is packed, our road trip playlist ready and with an early morning coffee in hand, we hit the road. Playing songs that we so desperately desire to be performed on stage, we prepare our hearts for a glorious weekend filled with sweet melodies and rocking beats. Excitement reaches its maximum as we gaze apon the green fields of Darling and in just a few short moments we arrive at our destination, Rocking the Daisies Music Festival.
People travel from a far to come and experience the wonder that is Rocking the Daisies. Whether it is by bicycle, car, bus or foot, they all gather here at Kloof Wine Estate to what is believed to be South Africa’s premier eco-friendly music and lifestyle festival. Rocking the Daisies is held every year in the early days of October and has something for everyone.

From the break of dawn until the early hours of the morning music forms the backdrop to the festival. From rock to jazz to alternative, make no mistake, you will be entertained by South Africa’s finest! Besides the music, you may find yourself getting slightly lost in the endless entertainment spots and planned activities not even to mention the markets and food stalls!

The festival is associated with World Wildlife Foundation and Greenpeace and aims at promoting green, eco-friendly living. Great use of solar and wind powered electricity, bio-diesel generators and LED lighting helps to keep this event as carbon neutral as possible. The fields are transformed into a massive camping site, so get out that camping gear and prepare to really get in touch with nature.

Dis huisgesin sit om die tafel na ‘n lekker Vrydagaand braai, en die woorde vloei heen en weer terwyl daar kort-kort geskater word. Dis nou politiek en Malema en die ANC en Zille wat weer dans, voordat pa oorkant die tafel Peter de Villiers se naam noem en ma wat oë rol omdat sy weet in watter rigting die gesprek gaan…

Elkeen van ons ken die storie, of dit nou afspeel om ‘n braaivleisvuur, en of dit nou is om ‘n tafel by die bekende koffiewinkel in die dorp, ons Afrikaners is lief daarvoor om te klets. Ons
instink is van nature om te gesels en saam te kuier oor aktuele en sommer nuttelose onderwerpe. Van rugby, tot politiek en nog sover as die petrolprys word tot in die fynste detail bespreek en elkeen het sy eie opinie. Ons is juis ingestel om so op te tree, en niemand kan kwalik geneem word oor sy of haar opinie nie.

Die gesprek kan hier stop, maar daar
moet onderskeid getref word wanneer daar geredeneer word oor interne sake – beleide wat in plek gestel word en besluite wat geneem word waaraan daar iets aktief gedoen kan word. Menigte van ons is so vinnig om ons opinie te lig oor die persoon langs ons oor die besluit wat hy/sy neem, dat ons selde besef dat ons onsself eintlik net te gering skat om op te staan en die standpunt in te neem wat die een links of regs van ons bereid was om te doen.

Dalk het dit tyd geword om van ons ‘high horses’ af te klim en eerder ‘n wag voor ons mond te plaas, voordat ons ‘n opinie lig oor ‘n saak waarvoor ons nie die bereidheid gehad het om self aan te pak nie. Dalk het dit tyd geword dat jy jouself die vraag moet vra: lewer ek slegs opinies of is ek regtig bereid om self my moue op te rol en aktief by te dra tot die oplossing. Dit het tyd geraak dat elkeen van ons moet besluit of ons net wil opstaan sodat ons ons opinie wil lig, en of ons bereid is om eerder insette te lewer. Want as jy wil staan en ‘n bydrae lewer, staan dan, maar as jy dan eerder wil bly sit, bly dan sommer stil ook.

Huisfondsdans- ‘Kasi’ style:

Eita Ola! A big congratulation goes out to Johan Bosch and his team for organising a successful Huisfondsdans, this past Saturday 16th of March during the first Hippo innaweek. This evening of “Township Living” was enjoyed by all of the guest that attend. The essence of the theme was captured perfectly by the simplicity of the décor and the shelter provided by the washing line.

The tone for the evening was set from the beginning, with the tickets complimenting the theme right through to the beverages served on the evening. It excited many to see quartz of beer on the tables as it truly reflected how a true ’kuier’ in the ‘kasi’ would be like. Bosch made sure that the guests were well fed, but this came with a price of him having to stand in front of the braai the whole day, braai-ing away at the steak that would later be served as burgers, but it was all worth it at the end. Of course our fellow Hippo residents did not fail to impress as they rose to the occasion with their outfits, ranging from floral shirts and bow ties to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates supporters.

A great night seemed to have been enjoyed by all that attended. Great food, wine, beer and exciting décor all contributed to the night being a great success. A BIG thank you and congratulations needs to go out to Johan Bosch and his team, which consisted of: Esmare, Kim, Elmarie, Louis Scott, Roger, Gaby, El-Marie, Heike, Herman, Nico, Jannes, Megan, Daphne, Klara, Francios, Joandi.

Innaweek

Dit is alweer daardie tyd van die jaar. Die tyd van die jaar waar eerstejaars spontaan potjie en punch maak. Die tyd van die jaar waar seksietrots meer belangrik is as die inhoud van die Netter atlas. Dit is sowaar tyd vir die eerste innaweek van 2013.

Interseksiekrieket dien as ‘n voorsmakie vir ‘n naweek vol aktiwiteite. Testosteroon bene en estrogeen arms was almal betrokke op die Hippogras die afgelope paar dae en as mens net na die ondersteuning kyk sou mens glo ds ‘n IPL T20 toets.
