Hippokrates Sport
Hippokrates is sowaar ‘n voorbeeld van die spreekwoord: “Klein botteltjies met groot gif”. Hippokrates se 270 inwoners (mans en dames), is van die mees talentvolle studente op beide Tygerberg- en Hoofkampus van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. Hippokrates kompeteer meestal saam met die ander koshuise op Tygerberg (as ‘Medies’) teen die res van Stellenbosch Universiteit se koshuise. Op die Tygerbergkampus is daar geleentheid om aan verskeie sportsoorte deel te neem:
Hockey
Our two men’s hockey teams do not often collect the ball from their own net. This might just be the reason why the Medics 1st men’s hockey team came second in the whole league, just narrowly losing to a very strong Dagbreek side in the final last year(2011).
Ons manne is uiters goed, maar vir ons Medies Hokkie dames is tweede plek net nie goed genoeg nie. So was hulle laas jaar as die beste hokkiespan op Stellenbosch kampus gekroon.
Matches take place on various days of the week and most of the time in the evenings.
Rugby
Medics rugby, being 99% occupied by Hippokrates, is one of our campus’ top prides. Competing against hostels and private student organisations with over 600 men residing in them, Medics use what we have with about 34 rugby players to fill up our two teams. Luckily they are some of the top athletes of Tygerberg campus. Medics is a word that strikes fear in the hearts of our opponents as they know what we are capable of.
In 2010 was Medies as naawenners gekroon nadat hulle slegs een wedstryd verloor het uit die 13 wedstryde wat hulle gespeel het. Hippo het ‘n groot hoeveelheid rugby spelers wat nie net die koshuis nie, maar ook die Universiteit op Maties-vlak verteenwoordig.
Tweede span wedstryde vind op Dinsdae plaas en Sauer-liga wedstryde word op Vrydae gespeel.
Soccer
The soccer stars of Hippokrates have scored some goals even the great Argentinean, Lionel Messi, would be proud of. Every year, being a top contender in the league, victory is no strange thing to these athletes. Also competing in the Stellenbosch University residence league, these boys take the saying “Practice makes perfect” very serious. Hippokrates offers some of the top footballers in the team. They do not only fill the spots, but are the heart and soul of the Medics soccer team.
Netbal
Die dames van Hippokrates mag dalk mooi en fraai voorkom, maar sodra hulle hul voete op die netbalbaan sit, is dit verby met die speletjies. Ons is baie trots op ons dames wat nie as Medies deelneem nie, maar as ons eie Hippokrates Netbalspan. Van die lede in ons netbalspan het hul provinsies en selfs vir Suid-Afrika in netball verteenwoordig.
In 2011 het die dames van die Hippokrates netbalspan met ‘n derde plek uit die Universiteit van Stellenbosch se koshuis netbal-liga gestap.
Cricket
By the way our cricketers perform, you will definitely know they have great talents and a love for the game. They not only represent our campus, but also our residence with pride. The cricket team, also mainly occupied by Hippo boys, were crowned the 2010 champions, with a remarkable performance throughout that year. In 2011 they were beaten in the semi-finals after a good and steady season. It is another sport where even a junior Proteas player represents Hippokrates on international grounds.
Squash
Hierdie is die ratsste persone op die Tygerbergkampus en blykbaar op Hoofkampus ook. Squash manne was as die algehele wenners gekroon vir die afgelope twee jaar en laat hul nie deur ander spane klop nie.
Tennis & Tafeltennis
Tennis word aangebied vir beide mans en dames en liga wedstryde vind plaas op Saterdae. Kompetisie is straf, maar ruimte word vir die prêt van hierdie sport gelaat.
Waterpolo
For the guys wanting to show off their six packs or “beer boeps” – waterpolo gives an excellent opportunity to do just that. Played in the Stellenbosch University indoor pool, waterpolo takes fitness to a new level. If you have no fear of drowning, this might just be the sport for you.
As you can see Hippokrates is not only a residence with a lot brains, but also the equivalent of braun. We take pride in everything we do and sport is no exception.
