Risk Factors for HIV Transmission

HIV cannot survive outside the body. It is only present in high enough concentration to cause infection in the following body fluids:

  • Blood and blood products
  • Semen and pre-seminal fluid
  • Vaginal and cervical secretions
  • Breast milk

(During invasive surgery, health workers may also come into contact with amniotic fluid cerebrospinal fluid and synovial fluid around bone joints.)

What this means is that there are only three ways in which you can get infected:

  • Sexual contact
  • Blood to blood
  • Mother to child
