Mother-to-child Transmission

HIV can be transmitted from mother to child. However, an HIV-positive mother can give birth to an HIV-negative child. Transmission occurs either:

  • via the placenta during pregnancy;
  • through blood contamination during labour; or
  • through breastfeeding.

Drugs are available to prevent mother-to-child transmission, which is why it is essential that prospective mothers know their status.
