Both Steinhoff Maties Hockey teams started the Western Province Grand Challenge with victories this past weekend.

The start of the season was a local derby with Maties taking on Vics at Coetzenburg.

The women’s team won 4-0. Annaline Davin scored twice for Maties, while Tarryn Glasby and Heather McEwan also made the scoreboard tick. It was a dominating performance by Maties, but Vics did show some promise for the rest of the season.

It was important for Maties to start the season strong with the Varsity Hockey tournament just around the corner. Maties are the defending champions for the tournament that starts in a few weeks time.

In the men’s game it was a truly one sided affair. Maties totally dominated and Vics will need to up the standard looking forward.

It was a big day for a few first years who made their debut for Maties. They were Bili Ntuli, Alex Stewart and Chris Hawkridge. Ntuli scored in the victory of 6-0. James Drummond hit the back of the box twice and Pierre de Voux, Rob Edwards and Dave Agar also got their names on the scorecard.

Other results from weekend: MEN: Maties III 2, Bellville 2; Maties IV 2, Fish Hoek 1; Maties V 1, Pinelands 2; Maties IV 2, Central 6; Maties V 5, Central 1. WOMEN: Maties III 3, Bellville 2; Maties IV 1, CPUT 2; Maties V 2, Northlink 1; Maties V 1, Central 0.
