The Steinhoff Maties Hockey men’s team has set its eye on a first Varsity Sports Hockey title.

The tournament starts this weekend at the University of Johannesburg. Next weekend’s matches will be at Maties.

UJ is the defending champion, while Maties played in the final the last time the men played the Varsity tournament. Other universities in the competition are Wits, Pukke, Tukkies, Kovsies, NMMU and Ikeys.

Maties take on UJ in Friday’s first match. Then they play Kovsies, NMMU and Pukke on the following three days of the tournament. Only Monday’s matches will be televised.

For many of the players – like Luke Schooling, Reece Arendse, Jackie Mohlaba and Tom Richardson – it will be a first time experience. But for the likes of Dylan Swanepoel and Daniel Bell it will be second and last time around. These two are probably are their last season at Maties and having played in the losing final in 2014 they want to set the record straight this time year.

With Maties 7s rugby team victory at the weekend’s Varsity Sports Sevens tournament, the Maties hockey men will use the win as an inspiration and extra motivation.

The Maties squad for Varsity Hockey: Justin Miller, Dylan Swanepoel, Dan Bell, Jackie Mohlaba, Tom Richardson, Justin Nel, Ally Stewart, Matt de Sousa, Charlie Bowren, Justin de Nysschen, Connor Beauchamp, Keenan Horne, Shannon Boucher, Luke Schooling, James Drummond, Reece Arendse, Dayne Samboer.
