The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has a training arm called the IMF Institute (IMFI) which provides training in economic management to officials of the IMF's member countries. These courses are attended by mid- to senior level officials from ministries of finance, central banks and other financial institutions. The IMFI presented its first course at Stellenbosch University in 2007 on Financial Programming and Policies. 32 Representatives from 14 African countries, including South Africa attended the course. After the success of hosting the first course, the IMFI entered into discussions with the Postgraduate and International Office and a more regular course offering on the Stellenbosch campus has been established. The Department of Economics at Stellenbosch University is the academic partner in this project whilst the Postgraduate and International Office provide pre-arrival and on-site logistical and administrative support for the project. Annually, three or four courses are now presented on the Stellenbosch campus. |
