A strong research profile is central to offering and sustaining high quality postgraduate programmes. Stellenbosch University is home to 245 NRF rated researchers, indicating the level, recognition and quality of its scholars in many fields. In terms of formal academic output in the form of accredited publications, the academic corps produced the highest research output per capita in the country in 2008. The University hosts ten SARChI Research Chairs (SA Research Chairs Initiative). The Research Chairs are in the fields of: Functional Nanostructured Materials; Experimental Petrology; Advanced Macromolecular Architectures; Genetic Tailoring of Biopolymers; Post-Harvest Technology; Photonics, Ultrafast and Ultra-Intense Laser Science; Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome; Economics of Social Policy; Property Law and Computational Electromagnetics. Furthermore, three of the prestigious DST/NRF Centres of Excellence are housed at Stellenbosch University as well as other important national centres. Stellenbosch University thus has an excellent research profile and seeks to attract talented students to its postgraduate programmes. Admission is competitive.
