Lydia Ladies Residence History

A ladies residence of Stellenbosch University, was completed in late 1952 and opened its doors for the first time in 1953. The residence was established in tribute to Professor Lydia van Niekerk. Lydia van Niekerk, professor of Dutch Literature and first woman to be appointed to the chair at the University of Stellenbosch, was born on the farm Diepkloof, district Uitenhage. Van Niekerk studied at the universities of Leyden and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. On her return to South Africa after obtaining a D.Litt et Phil degree, she lectured at the Huguenot University College in Wellington. In 1920 she was offered a professorship at the University of Stellenbosch, where she worked until her death on 2 November 1929. Van Niekerk was an important literary critic and an authority on literary subjects.

Culture

"Every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once she grows up" - Pablo Picasso

Our cultural calendar kicks off with Molasassêr which is a fun "serenade walk" where the first years learn songs along with fun moves and move from one men's residence to another, performing for the boys. It is an informal version of Klein Sêr.

Lydia also takes part in Toneelfees where we write, direct and perform short theatrical production. The actors, writer and director are all Lydianers, naturally. One of the plays is performed with a men's residence.

Klein Sêr is one of the highlights of the year. The first round usually takes place in August, with the finals in September. Lydia have been in the finals and semi-finals for the past four years; the next step is to bring the trophy home!

Cultural Evenings promise a festive time for audiences and participants. These evenings happen frequently throughout the year and take place in Lydia or at another men's residence. Some ladies and men in each residence perform a variety of fun talents, creating a fun and spontaneous talent show-feel.

Lydia values its culture and sees it vital to keep the artist in each Lydianer alive.

Events

Big Sis Little Sis

Tuin Party

22 February 2014

Tuinparty is a big tea party held for all Lydianers in Lydia's stunning quad. Ladies attend in their summer dresses and are treated to delicious cakes, savoury snacks and fun games. The morning is usually decorated to a theme, such as Mad Hatter's Tea Party and Pretty in Pastel. It is a unique Lydia tradition and is one worth looking forward to!

Damedag

5 March 2014

Die afgelope jare se temas was "The Great Gatsby" en "Midnight in Paris".

It is the opportunity to spend time with our sisters while celebrating all that is Lydia!

Lydia Week

21 - 26 July 2014

The name says it all: Lydia Week is die week waarin Stellenbosch kampus weer bewus gemaak word van die dames van kampus. Activities such as "boere-sport" and Mnr Wilgenhof and Mej Lydia take place during this week. With different men residences coming to sing during lunch, dances, movie nights and loads more, it is easy to see why this is one of the best weeks of the year.

First Years Dance

22 July 2014

The first years dance is organised by the First Years Committee for all the first years. It is a fun filled evening where all the first years get together and dress up according to a specific theme, the theme for 2013 was Athletes vs. Mathletes and was held at Tollies. The first years dance is traditionally held in the third term and forms part of Lydia week.

Senior Dance

24 July 2014

Senior Dance takes place in the same week as First Year's dance. Similar to First Year's dance, Senior Dance is organised by the Second Years Committee except to a different, crazy theme. Last year's theme was Bikers and Barbies and was also held at Tollies.

Huisdans

7 August 2014

It's a memorable night where the Ladies of Lydia have the opportunity to enjoy a special evening together and to celebrate everything Lydia has achieved during the year.

Hennedinee

October 2014

Hennedinee is Lydia's final social event on the calendar. The purpose of this event is to bid farewell in a light-hearted manner to all those leaving the residence. The evening's decor, attire and games are all done according to a specific theme. During the event, ladies enjoy their last opportunity to be together as a single residence whilst celebrating the achievements of those leaving the family.

Prospective Residents

We are always on our toes, waiting and excited to welcome new sisters to our Lydia family!

To apply for a place in Lydia Dameskoshuis, choose Lydia as your first option in Stellenbosch University's application form. Unfortunately, due to recent changes in the University's Residence Placement Policy, residences across campus will no longer be accepting CV applications.

Here we are a family and not just a residence or a place to sleep and study. Lydia ladies encourage and look out for each other, support and celebrate one another.
