The War and Society in Africa conference series is a unique event framed to explore facets of the multifarious and reciprocal impacts between the phenomenon of war and African society. Spearheaded by Prof Ian van der Waag, five conferences have been convened at the Faculty of Military Science, sometimes in partnership, between 2000 and 2006.

33rd INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE ICMH: 12-17 AUGUST 2007
Prof Potgieter was the head of the organising committee of the XXXIIIrd International Congress of the International Commission of Military History (ICHM), Cape Town, 12-17 August 2007. The ICMH is an affiliated international organisation under the auspices of UNESCO. The congress theme was “Regions, Regional Organisations and Military Power”. It was a huge success and South Africa received much international praise as a result. This auspicious congress was organised by the South African Military History Commission (SAMHC), under the auspices of the South African National Defence Force, and the Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University.

INTERNATIONAL MARITIME SECURITY CONFERENCE: 22-23 JULY 2008
An international conference on “Maritime Security in Southern African Waters”, was organised by Prof Potgieter at STIAS, Stellenbosch, 22-23 July 2008. The conference was the result of cooperation between Prof Potgieter, Prof Reiner Pommerin from Dresden Techinical University (DTU); and Prof Solly Mollo. The sponsor was ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG (TKMS), Germany.

The first thoughts of such a meeting which has formed the basis of the ‘Inaugural’ Defence Academies and Colleges eLearning Conference arose from an informal professional connection between Noëlle and Allan some two years ago about issues arising from the use of learning management systems. From that, with strong interest from Darien and Henk, it grew into a strong collaboration between three universities - Stellenbosch University, Cranfield University and the University of New South Wales. Each of these universities is contracted to their respective Defence Departments to provide higher education to Defence staff and through ongoing discussion, staff from these universities have developed the beginning of a collaborative activity aimed at canvassing issues impacting on eLearning in an academy or college environment and providing solutions.

FIRST CONFERENCE ON STRATEGIC THEORY AND CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ARMED CONFLICTS: 10-11 JUNE 2009
The conference on Strategic Theory and Contemporary African Conflicts is the result of cooperation between the faculties of the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC) in Copenhagen Denmark, and the Faculty of Military Science of Stellenbosch University housed by the South African Military Academy in Saldanha, South Africa.  The cooperation stems from a series of conversations between Dr Thomas Mandrup of Denmark and Dr Francois Vreÿ from South Africa that originated in 2008 and came to fruition in the conference on the Stellenbosch University campus in South Africa over the period
10-11 June 2009.
