There was a fluctuant mass of her Left greater trochanter. Ultrasound showed an abscess. ESR and white cell count raised. Xrays show a periosteal reaction about the greater trochanter.
Tuberculosis and bacterial infection can take place at the greater trochanter. A abscess cavity in the presence of periosteal reaction is suggestive of sepsis. In South Africa tuberculosis is sometimes seen in the trochanteric bursa about the greater trochanter. In this case Staphylococcus Aureus was cultured proving a bacterial cause for her bursitis.
