Third image
The plain x ray shows a calcified mass near on the radial border near the scaphoid. The MRI shows a mass with a definite margin in the region of the scaphoid. On some views the signal void, typical of calcification can be seen.
A cartilage mass was removed at surgery. It was not firmly attached to surrounding bone bur appeared to originate in or near the scaphoid.
Histologically it consisted of well organised cartilage and this contained a area of normal trabecular bone.
This mass was either an osteochondroma which had become detached from the parent bone or was a synovial osteochondromal fragment growing in the synovial surroundings of the scaphoid.
