While feeling the weight of the whole university’s eyes upon Oude Molen as we took on the challenge of hosting Oude Molen’s and the university’s very first PSO camp. Along with the pressures from the expecting 1^st Years and their unsure parents.

We quickly sat their minds to ease by welcoming them with the full pride of the Oude Molen HK and our 2^nd Years. The 1^st Years had no idea what to expect except for being hazed and tortured by the leadership of Oude Molen. We however made sure they understood that we were not there to haze them and explained what our purpose was and the purpose of the camp:

We wanted to provide a secure environment for the 1^st years and the HK to get to know one another, whilst building lasting bonds and valuable friendships that will support their time here at Stellenbosch University.

After swiftly handling all the admin, we started with our program which was addressing the parents and explaining our mission and vision for Oude Molen and their sons. The HK planned several activities and introduced the concept of villages to the 1^st Years. We divided the 1^st Years in to four villages, which is a very useful control tool that allows 2 HK’s to be in charge of  a single village. The Villages were named as follows; Aquila (the Eagle), Aeberon (the Bear), Lev (the Lion) and Lukos (the Wolf). The village system proved to be a great method of dividing the 1^st Years in measurable and easily controlled group that was ideal for some interhouse competition and spirit building.

We had the first years engaged in several sporting and team building competitions and activities, such as time trials, cricket, rugby, logic puzzles, soccer, water sports and song writing. At the end of each night we lit a bonfire where everyone gathered to share their own stories, experiences, thoughts and some great laughs of course.

The spirit and enthusiasm presented by the new Molle was unbelievable, and they were not short of respect, enough to make any HK proud to have them. And what a talented group they were, each having an area of expertise in sports, pool, social, athletics, gymnastics, music and even uni-cycling!

They are really a great group of Molle and without them the camp would not have been possible. I hope that each and every one return to us on Wednesday when MAD² period kicks off. They will be the glue that keeps all the other new Molle, which are joining us on Wednesday, to Oude Molen.

We asked some random Molle to write us a short review about the camp, and this is  what they had to say:

“Lekker camp, Lekker okes. Really feel the bond, between us already. Een keer ‘n mol, altyd ‘n mol!”

“Been waiting for something like this for a while. Great to see a bunch of brothers who stand together no matter what.  Proud to be part of Oude Molen.”

“Really glad I came… Had lots of fun and enjoyed it! It’s an awesome experience and I’m really glad I came on the camp .”

“I am so stoked I came. Oude Molen is the only PSO for me I will do whatever I can to be involved with the next year’s camp. I would recommend the camp to any SU student in Oude Molen.”

A final thanks to all the 1^st Years that attended the camp and their parents for attending the Parents Meeting. Thanks to our 2^nd Years Committee that worked exceptionally hard in helping to ensure the success of the camp. To “Die Eiland”, that allowed us to make use of their facilities. The final round of applause goes to the HK for all of their effort in making the camp a huge success. Well done guys!

First-year students who want to avoid the long queues during the upcoming registration period can make use of Stellenbosch University’s e-registration option that commences on 14 January 2012.

Any computer with Internet access (www.mymaties.com) may be used. Students who do not have access to a computer may make use of the computer-user area that will be made available on the Stellenbosch Campus especially for this purpose. This computer area will be available from 23 January to 2 February 2012.

Students who do not use the e-registration option will have to follow the normal registration programme  on 30 and 31 January 2012 at the computer user area of the Faculty of Science (NARGA) in Block A of the Administration Building.

What is needed for registration?

1. Final 2011 matric results: National Senior Certificate
examination (original)

2. Candidates who matriculated in 2010 or earlier: Original
matric exam certificate

3. Candidates from other school systems: Original schoolleaving
certificate along with certificate of exemption issued
by SA Matriculation Board

4. Candidates who studied at other universities: The
abovementioned documents as well as an original academic
record and certificate of satisfactory conduct issued by the
university concerned

5. Do you comply with all the admission requirements for your
chosen study programme?

6. Remember, you will not be able to register as a first-year
student if you have not taken the University’s access tests. For more information

The University’s official welcoming programme kicks off on Thursday, 26 January 2012 with a mass gathering for new students and their parents in the Danie Craven Stadium at Coetzenburg. The welcoming week comes to an end on Saturday, 4 February and academic classes start on Monday, 6 February.

To ensure that all first-years slot in at their respective faculties, get to know the campus, and become accustomed to all the support services SU offers, it is important that they attend all Welcoming events.

“I trust that, in the coming years, you will form lasting ties with your fellow students, and draw maximum benefit from the opportunities at your disposal, so that one day you will be able to look back appreciatively to your time here as the best years of your life,” says SU’s Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Russel Botman.

Slowly but surely, the sun was setting and the people arrived, familiar faces and random people were also added in the mix. The party moved all over, the lawn, the roof and the in the room (just the party, no naughty thoughts!) The meat was awesome and the people went all out, plus the vibe was great. To top it all off, the night lead us to party on in Bohemia and town.

Thanks to everyone that made an appearance and everyone else that attributed to yet another fun filled experience, with new friends.

This Sunday morning, August 21st, a couple of the Oude Molen boys embarked on Oude Molen Distillery’s MTB Challenge. The weather seemed very promising with a strong wind, pouring rain and freezing temperatures, which did not dampen the Oude Molen spirit at all.

The race started with some good humoured jests from the announcer and we responded with the proud enthusiasm of Molle. We set out on the treacherous 10km mountain trial against ferocious competition, ranging from 8 year olds to primary school kids. We were off to an extraordinary start, taking the first possible wrong turn, leading the whole group astray. We were confident until we reach the first hill, taking more wrong turns everywhere we go. The route was set to green arrows and we ended up following blue, red, black, purple and a few green arrows.

10km later some of us finally reached the 1st watering point, for the 35km and 60km trail. Where after, more confusion, fun and adventure followed. Abandoning the 10km route and we ended starting our very own Oude Molen Route. I object to the notion that one of the professional riders received the title of ‘King of the Mountain’, where it should be Oude Molen receiving the title, seeing as we were spread out all over the mountain, some jumping fences, others cycling in circles and some of us without brakes.

Eventually we got back on track and made it to the finish line, where Henri, Mol Die Wet, and Anroux, Mol Scruffy, somehow came in 3rd and 4th place respectively. Congratulations guys. As we all regrouped we spent the rest of our time sharing stories whilst sipping on some of Oude Molen Distillery’s finest brandies. A special note to Juan: which is being nominated for the ‘Crash Test Dummy Award’ who failed to keep his wheels on the ground 3 times and even managed a face plant in a puddle of mud, yet it never dampened his spirit, he got back and never backed down.

A special thanks to everyone that attended the event and made it an adventure worth of remembrance. A special thanks to Anroux for organising our participation to the event. A thanks to Oude Molen Distillery for their venue and welcoming gifts. And another thanks to everyone that was involved in the transport.
