Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences’ (FMHS) vision is education and research for innovation, incorporating interdisciplinary cooperation and new thinking to meet the special health needs of South Africans and promote social responsibility.

As one of the leaders in health sciences, the FMHS strives to create a student-centred learning culture in which independent, professional people can develop and where new knowledge, applicable to Africa, is generated. The FMHS adds value to the broader community through participation and service delivery.

The FMHS strives to create an inclusive environment in which a diverse community of students and staff can feel supported, respected, affirmed and valued. The Faculty not only has the best undergraduate throughput figures in the University, but also has the best diversity profile. The excellent quality of education that the Faculty offers can, amongst others, be measured in terms of the international recognition that our postgraduate training enjoys.

As a tertiary educational institution in health sciences operating in a country with a diverse disease profile, the Faculty strongly promotes a research approach based on global excellence and local relevance.

The Faculty is a leader in terms of the acquisition of state of the art technology and equipment, such as the 3-Tesla Allegra brain imaging scanner and the Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer, both of which are the first of their kind in Africa. The Faculty furthermore continues to show strong growth in terms of research outputs, and an increase in research funding and collaborations.

Proud research tradition

The annual output of the Faculty is testimony to a proud research tradition: over 300 refereed scientific articles in reputable journals and more than 600 scientific papers, abstracts and posters at congresses and other scientific meetings in South Africa and abroad. We also, on average, graduate 80 master’s and more than 15 doctoral candidates each year.
