Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
The vision of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) is to promote health and equality in South Africa and beyond. The Faculty's mission is:
- to create and maintain a culture of transformative learning;
- to contribute to the discovery, sharing and translation of knowledge that will promote health and development; and
- to benefit the broader community by means of active citizenship.
The FMHS offers a number of excellent academic training programmes, underpinned by research of the highest quality and supported by well-integrated quality assurance and academic administration structures and processes. These programmes provide for the needs of a wide range of healthcare disciplines.
Over decades of dedicated and sustained work, the FMHS has built up an excellent reputation for research. We continue to perform as a leading research-rich environment with extensive international collaborations, in addition to national and local partnerships. A research agenda shaped by strategic research focus areas ensures that our research activities address the major health challenges facing the African continent.
The Faculty is a leader in terms of the acquisition of state of the art technology and equipment. It hosts the Sunskill Laboratory, an integrated clinical training laboratory that offers eight fully simulated theatre operating stations, a 'dry' laboratory, a 100-seat lecture theatre and a virtual ICU - all complemented and connected by breakthrough audio-visual capabilities. The Faculty furthermore continues to show strong growth in terms of research output, and an increase in research funding and collaborations.
Proud research tradition
The annual output of the Faculty is testimony to a proud research tradition: over 300 refereed scientific articles in reputable journals and more than 600 scientific papers, abstracts and posters at congresses and other scientific meetings in South Africa and abroad. We also, on average, graduate 80 master's and more than 30 doctoral candidates each year.
