Mawethu has worked as a field researcher for the then Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism in the sub Antarctic Marion Island, and for the South African National Biodiversity Institute in Kirstenbosch, Cape Town. He proceeded to gain experience in research management doing a research management internship at the Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology at Stellenbosch University where he later worked as a project manager.
Mawethu is now interested in the popularisation of science and in science for society and in his new role, he is responsible for the overall promotion of research activities at Stellenbosch University by establishing new and fostering existing research partnerships with national science councils to broaden the university’s research network; strengthen its research profile; and mobilise external funds for research and technology development.
This role includes involvement in the activities of parliament by liaising with various portfolio committees to get university researchers and students to contribute in public participation activities and experts’ consultation and commentary on legislations of parliament. Also, this role connects the Divisions for Research Development and Community Interaction to promote research as a career option to school learners and prospective postgraduates, and to build public relations in order to promote Stellenbosch University research outputs as relevant to society.
