General Information

A survey is done annually to record research activities of the previous output year. Not all research activities or achievements are reported, only those that are the result of original research. Part of this survey is in accordance with the Department of Education's policy (.pdf) regarding the measurement of research output for subsidy purposes while the rest of the information is reported in the annual research report. Find here the Notice and Internal Guidelines (.pdf) for submission of research output for subsidy as well as for reporting purposes.

Books and conference proceedings, which purpose is to disseminate original research and new developments within specific disciplines, sub-disciplines or fields of study, can be submitted for subsidy purposes. Evidence of peer review is a fundamental prerequisite and physical copies of the publications have to be provided as well. In the case of books and/or chapters in books, each physical copy of the book has to be accompanied by a statement from the publishers indicating that a process of peer review prior to publication had been followed.

Research articles in accredited journals also qualify for subsidy. Exclusions are correspondence to the editors, abstracts or extended abstracts, obituaries, book reviews, news articles and advertorials. Inclusions to the lists of accredited journals have to be directed to the ISI or IBSS in the case of international journals.  South African Journals (.pdf) that meet with the criteria of the Department of Education may be proposed for inclusion and this process is administered by the Department of Education.

At SU an incentive by means of the Special Support Scheme (SOS) for research (.doc); is employed to encourage researchers to publish their research activities according to the official policy of the Department of Education regarding the subsidising of research publications.
