THRIP

Does my project qualify for THRIP funding?

The following requirements apply:

  • Project leaders must have an employment contract with a South African HEI or a government Science, Engineering and Technology Institution (SETI)-based institution
  • Project leaders may not be a student on any THRIP project
  • Project leaders may not own 5% or more of the shares in the company constituting the industrial partner (nor their team members, or their respective immediate family members)
  • A contract or MoA must exist between the researcher and the industry partner in which ownership and exploitation of intellectual property arising from a project are agreed on
  • Where applicable the financial investment commitment must be communicated by the industrial partner
  • In the case of a foreign industrial partner there must be an indication of how South Africa stands to benefit from the anticipated technology outcomes resulting from the collaboration
  • The project must be a high quality science, engineering and/or technology research of which the outputs could make a significant contribution towards improving the industry partner's competitive edge
  • The project intention should be innovation, i.e., should lead to the creation and transfer of new knowledge into a process or product (prototype), or the transfer of existing knowledge into a new process or product to benefit the industry partner
  • At least one registered South African student at 4th year level of study or higher, must be involved in and trained through the research per R200 000 of THRIP investment. Note that a different ratio applies to non-South African students.
