Research Indaba

Grant Writing
A one day interactive workshop on the fundamentals of Grant Proposal Writing. The workshop is aimed at increasing chances of receiving grant funding for research by understanding what funders are looking for in a grant proposal and how to put together a grant proposal.
Conference Presentation Skills
A one day interactive workshop aimed at improving the conference presentation skills of researchers. The workshop is designed to give researchers general guidance on polishing their presentation skills and inexperienced presenters can learn to overcome any anxieties they may have in a non-threatening environment.
Research Ethics
Animal Sciences: An introduction to the ethical principles applicable when animals are used for research and training purposes and relevant South African legislation. An overview of compliancy structures and processes will be provided.
Health Sciences: A workshop aimed at familiarizing researchers with principles of health research ethics in a develoing world context, the current regulatory framework for health research in South Africa and ethics committee application and review processes.
Media Communication
An interactive science communication and media skills workshop specifically designed to address the communication needs and challenges faced by researchers. Objectives include:
- To introduce delegates to the field of science communication;
- To understand the media and the dynamics between scientists and journalists;
- To develop skills, confidence and motivation in dealing with the media
Full Costing, Research Contracts and Intellectual Property Management
The workshop is aimed at improving the understanding of the contractual aspects pertaining to research contracts including; the process, contractual risks, intellectual property rights and full cost of research projects.
Financial and Contractual Compliance of National and International Research Grants
The workshop is aimed at improving the understanding of the Financial and Contractual Compliancy matters related to national and international research grants. The workshop is designed to give researchers general guidance on meeting the compliancy requirements of national and international research grants, with special focus on TIA, NIH, USAID and EU. Information on support offered to researchers with the drafting of proposals, as well as the post-award management and functions, will be discussed.
Postdoc Research Day
A full research day aimed at involving postdocs in campus activities, strengthening their visibility and importance as an integral part of the research community and contribution they make in terms of research at SU.
Postgraduate supervision
This workshop is aimed at inexperienced supervisors who wish to get a good overview of postgraduate supervision and to develop specific skills in this regard.
