Unit for Afrikaans and English
The main focus of the Unit for Afrikaans and English is the empowerment of the Stellenbosch University student to be able to use generic language and thinking skills in a strategic and responsible manner within different contexts.
The Unit is responsible for the provision and/or coordination of most initiatives regarding Afrikaans and English language development, both within and outside the academic programme offering of the University. These responsibilities include the following:
- The promotion of Afrikaans as academic language
- The promotion of Afrikaans as a spoken language
- The general development of students’ language and thinking skills
- The development of students’ academic literacy
- The development of students’ Afrikaans language skills
- The development of Afrikaans language skills of staff who do not have Afrikaans as a home language
- Services to international students who need Afrikaans or English for academic purposes
- The introduction of Afrikaans and English to international students within the broader South African context
- Research in the area of language and communication, with a special focus on the multicultural Southern African context
