Project Director

Dr. Ronelle Carolissen

As Director of the Unit for Community Psychological Services, I am proud to be associated with the Watergarden project. This project started in 2006 and is now a flourishing and ongoing endeavour. The Watergarden volunteers are drawn largely from the Psychology department but also other faculties such as Commerce, Engineering and Science. I believe that the successes of this project hinge on the dedication of its core management team, Liezle, Lynn, Heloïne and Caitlin; and their ability to recruit and retain their large body of student volunteers.

My first memory of Watergarden is my first day as a volunteer on the Klapmuts sports field in 2008. I did not know what to expect once I got out of the van that brought us there. Lorenza Williams, the project manager at the time, assured me that the children would love me, but I honestly found it hard to believe that my presence alone would bring a smile to a child’s face. The children of Klapmuts gave me a taste of unconditional love that day. In a world where people try to earn love and acknowledgement through doing things for others, on that field you are loved, simply because you showed up. It was in that moment that I learnt that the less I think of myself and my comforts, the more I can give.
