Asmaa Omer Tiraab Tbaeen (MSc Mathematics, UWC and AIMS and Stellenbosch University)

Level: PhD

Supervisor: Prof. Cang Hui (Stellenbosch University)

Co-supervisor: Dr. Pietro Landi (Stellenbosch University)

Biography

Asmaa was born in Alfasher, North Darfur, Sudan, and raised in various villages throughout North Darfur by her mother, a rural primary school teacher. She graduated from Alneelain University in Khartoum, Sudan, with a bachelor’s degree. She has also completed two master’s degrees in Mathematics. Asmaa is passionate about inspiring and empowering young women and girls. She has been involved in voluntary work, including teaching and mentoring in various contexts.

Research

Asmaa is interested in data science, time series analysis, population dynamics, as well as education, research and development. Asmaa’s current doctoral research is about designing indices for Early Warning Signals (EWS) of population viability, “extinction risk” , and species coexistence/ecosystem stability. These indices will be designed to capture coloured “environmental noise” trends, along with signals of ecosystem regime shift, collapse, stability, and viability. The results will be built into an application, which will be made freely available for ecological scientists, conservation managers, and policymakers to design climate mitigation and adaptation plans.
