The transition from school to university is challenging for most students and the Extended Degree programme (EDP) assists students, with the proven potential, in this transition by offering an additional year of studies to the traditional three-year BSc degree. The initial foundation year of this programme is used to develop essential academic and study skills to better prepare students for their studies and career paths. The Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science offers the 1st year module Introduction to Chemistry to all students enrolled in the Extended Degree Programme. The module focusses on expanding student knowledge of key scientific principles and skills. Topics to be covered include: Classification of matter; Atoms, molecules and ions; Stoichiometry; Reactions in aqueous solutions; Atomic structure; Chemical bonding and molecular structure; The periodic table; Weak acids and bases; Electrochemistry and Basic organic chemistry.
