Milandré van Lill is a senior researcher at the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) and the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence for Scientometrics and STI Policy (SciSTIP). Milandré holds a PhD in Science and Technology Studies and completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, during which time she earned a master’s degree in sociology.

Her doctoral studies investigated differences in the doctoral pipeline across academic disciplines and the development of indicators to measure doctoral efficiency in South Africa. Milandré has worked on a number of research projects, which include, among others studies on the retention and throughput of postgraduate students in South Africa; the assessment of the South African Research Enterprise; the scientometric assessment of basic and social sciences in South Africa; the mapping of social sciences research in South Africa; and a study on science granting councils in Sub-Saharan Africa. Some of her recent publications pertain to transformation in higher education and the mobility and brain circulation of African graduates. Milandre’s interests in research methodology and data science supports her work in the development of indicators for higher education with specific reference to the Higher Education Management Information Systems (HEMIS) data.

She is currently working on projects related to the careers and mobility of doctoral holders and emerging scholars, as well as the development of indicators for higher education.
