Dr Current Masunungure

Dr Current Masununugure is currently a Senior Programme Officer, Natural Climate Solutions at Verra, global leader in helping tackling the world’s most intractable environmental and social challenges by developing and managing standards that help the private sector, countries, and civil society achieve ambitious sustainable development and climate action goals. In addition to project quality oversight, as a Senior Programme Officer, he play a key role in contributing to the improvement of the VCS rules, requirements, and processes related to the AFOLU Pooled Buffer Account (Buffer Release and Buffer Maintenance), loss event reporting (process and guidelines), baseline reassessment (process and guidelines) as well as permanence (non-permanence risk reporting). Prior to joining Verra, he played a project-lead role in co-designing REDD+ project activities in Kenya, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe that ensure finance can be effectively channelled to long-term forest conservation by helping local communities thrive without harming biodiversity. Current was also previously appointed as a Guest Research Assistant (working with Dr Tatiana Ermolieva) at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria, where he helped develop a scenario-based optimisation model that sought to maximise effective and efficient use of available resources to control invasive alien plants to achieve optimal return on investment.
