Postdoc opportunity: Call for applications

We seek motivated individuals, who have a keen interest and passion for linking theory and practice to advance practical sustainability-related initiatives, an interest and ability to integrate across the social and natural sciences, and who enjoy collaboration and working in teams. Interested individuals should have a strong academic track-record, preferably with a background in ecology, environmental science or sustainability-related studies.

Learning pro-actively from the Covid19 pandemic

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit many communities across Cape Town sprang into action to support neighbours and to build and reinforce networks of solidarity forming Community Action Networks aligned with the Cape Town Together movement. CST researcher Nadia Sitas got involved in her neighbourhood of Muizenberg through the Muizenberg Community Action Network and started working with a local NGO Amava Oluntu and community group SpazaHub who supported community kitchens in the adjacent neighborhoods of Vrygrond and Capricorn.

The effectiveness of PLCAs in conserving biodiversity

State-owned protected areas may not be sufficient to achieve global conservation targets. Consequently, there has been increased attention to Private Land Conservation Areas (PLCAs) to chip in as a complementary conservation strategy, through increasing the total areas available for conservation, improving connectivity, and increasing the diversity of tenure types and conservation models.

CST students participate in the first Resilience Alliance Short Course

The first Resilience Alliance short course was held online from 24-28 May 2021. The course was organised in collaboration between the Resilience Alliance, a research organisation focussed on resilience in social-ecological systems as a basis for sustainability, and NSERC ResNet, a network for monitoring, modelling, and managing Canadian ecosystem services for sustainability and resilience.
