Willem completed his MSc, BSc Honours and BSc undergraduate degrees at Rhodes University. His MSc focussed on the identification of vulnerable components within the socio-ecological system of marine dependent coastal communities of Solomon Islands. After completion of his MSc in 2017, Willem worked as a fisheries consultant to clients in the South African fisheries industry and as an analyst for a software development company specialising in the marine technology space.

Willem’s research interests concern the identification of resilient attributes within socio-ecological systems, and especially the mechanisms and pathways by which these attributes promote resilience.
