In 2009, Manie Geyer became the Statistics South Africa Chair and Director of the Centre for Regional and Urban Innovation and Statistical Exploration (CRUISE) at the Department of Geography at Stellenbosch University. After nine years in the public sector from 1975s to 1983, ending as the head of planning of black metropolitan areas in Johannesburg and the East Rand, he started teaching at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at North-West University. He has coordinated a number of governmental and academic research projects both locally, nationally and internationally. His latest edited volumes include: The International Handbook of Urban Systems (2002), Global Regionalization (2006) and three volumes of The International Handbook of Urban Policy (2007/2009/2011) – a commissioned series.
