Taryn Bernard is Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and she coordinates the Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Taryn was awarded a PhD in applied linguistics in 2015 and she has since developed her expertise in methods of critical applied linguistics such as systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and critical discourse analysis (CDA). These methods of approaching language and textual analysis have not only influenced her approach to research but also her approach to teaching academic English to a culturally and linguistically diverse group of students. She currently holds a Teaching Fellowship for a longitudinal, visual ethnographic study that explores the identities, language ideologies as well as the language and literacy practices (“the linguistic repertoires”) of a group of multilingual students as they navigate their way through Stellenbosch University.
