Towards integrated student success: exploring TLA conceptualisations and practices at SU

Integrated student success refers to the ability of students enrolled in a degree to accomplish the learning outcomes at the expected level and within the expected time. It also extends to students’ ability to use their degrees to contribute to national and personal development. In most countries, student success brings to the surface structural social inequalities which, although they cannot be directly addressed by universities, require institutions to develop multipronged interventions in support of teaching, learning and assessment (TLA). These interventions (such as robust professional learning opportunities for university teachers, continuous academic and programme renewal, structured academic advising, and strong psychosocial and financial support) ensure that equity of outcomes is possible and that all students receive the agile support they require to succeed in their studies and afterwards. When we speak about a transformative student experience in relation to integrated student success, we also refer to the interface between student academic success and their sense and understanding of success in other areas of student and personal life, leadership, sports, politics, arts, communities, etc.

At this SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) conference, we want to explore how we understand integrated student success in relation to our practice as university teachers in a learning-centred TLA environment. The following are some of the questions we would like to address:

  • What approaches do we use to understand what lies behind our students’ learning or not learning?
  • How do we identify disparate student needs and respond to them?
  • How do we understand our role(s) and responsibilities within a multipronged intervention approach?
  • What resources, strategies and approaches have we experimented with at module and/or programme level?
  • What interdisciplinary collaborations across faculties and services are possible and viable? What works and what does not work?
  • How do you experience students’ own sense of their ‘success’ and learning and what sort of TLA approaches does this allow for?

We will include a student-based keynote panel, and selected student representatives will also be invited to attend the entire conference and provide insights. From practical classroom examples to scholarly research to prospective TLA ideas and projects, we look forward to sharing, learning, and expanding our understanding and practice of integrated student success.

The conference consists of three days. Day one is focused on workshops with the rest allocated to presentations. The workshop information and conference programme is still in process and will be added here once ready.
