Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning (by coursework): 11466 – 887(260) (Two-year programme)

This programme capacitates urban and regional planning students with a strong foundation in planning and urban theories and methodologies as well as well-developed practical skills in order to work and function as urban planners and analysts. The course content values quantitative and empirical tools such as spatial statistical analyses and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
This programme is accredited by SACPLAN and graduates who successfully completed this programme may register as Candidate Planners and, after obtaining the required post qualification experience, register as Professional Planners

Admission requirements:
  • A professional bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning or Development Planning, or an honours degree in Geography or Sustainable Development, or an equivalent qualification; and
  • a pass mark of 60%.

Admission to the programme may also be granted through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

  • International students:
    • Apply by 31 August of the preceding year.

Admission requirements:
  • A professional bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning or Development Planning; and
  • a pass mark of 60%.

  • South African students:

  • International students:
    • Apply by 31 August of the preceding year.

PhD in Urban and Regional Planning: 11466 – 978(360)


Admission requirements:
  • A master’s degree in one of the following fields: Urban and Regional Planning or Development Planning; or
  • an MTech in Urban and Regional Planning or another related discipline; or
  • a master’s degree approved by the Stellenbosch University Senate.
