We as Helderberg won the Summer league title in the final against Paul Roos Gymnasium on the 14th of March. However, it did not come easy. We started off in a group consisting of six teams, i.e. Libertas, Simonsberg, Academia, Olympus, Huis Marais and us. Over the course of four weeks, we played each of these teams, winning four and losing one.
Our last game against Huis Marais was a special one. For us to go through to the final group, we needed the two teams above us, Libertas and Simonsberg, to draw. As fate would have it, the night before our final these two teams did play out to a draw.
However, there was another requirement: we had to win our final game against Huis Marais with five goals or more, to ensure us going through on goal difference. The team got quite psyched up before the game and produced a top performance. We put six past Huis Marais to go through to the final group.
The final group consisted of four teams: Paul Roos, Helshoogte, Wilgenhof and Helderberg. We played another round robin, with the top two teams playing in the final. We beat Helshoogte in our first game with three goals to one, to give ourselves a good footing in the final. Unfortunately we lost our second game to Paul Roos with one goal, but we deservedly got our rematch in the final, after we beat Wilgenhof in our last game to top the group.
Paul Roos was without a doubt one of the tougher teams we played against. The fact that they are a school side means that they practice a lot more intensively and regularly as hostel sides. Accordingly, they are also a lot fitter, something which hostel sides are not known for. The game was end-to-end with the only goal being scored by Terry Heathcote, with the assist from Daniel Bell. The game was high-paced and tiring, but the Helderberg side was motivated by the great support of the Republic that rocked up on the night.
We were quite privileged to have made it till the final, but deservedly so and the trophy was an added bonus, that brought a great campaign to an end. The Summer league showed great promise for what is to follow in the Winter league and there can be said with certainty that every hockey player is looking forward to it.
The Summer league was a great way to start the year for our hostel. The Swarra Boys supported us all the way and played a great role in our success. The unity that is brought through such activities are key to hostel life. Even now as our hostel becomes more diverse each year we become even more unified as we play our hearts out for our mates next to the field, and even when it is our turn to support.
We all know that there is no better feeling than to feel part of something bigger than oneself and such sport activities amongst hostels give us exactly such a chance. Therefore such activities are key to the wellbeing of students as it offers us a chance to make new friends, to contribute to our hostel and therefore to feel part of a bigger movement.
We were very privileged to be part of the Helderberg 1st side and enjoyed playing with talented guys, who have now become our friends and look forward to once again representing the Republic on the field with them during the winter league.
