This coming Saturday both Steinhoff Maties Hockey Men and Women will play for overall glory in the Western Province Grand Challenge.

According to the new format of the WPGC the four top teams after the first round of the league will play in a second round of matches against each other.

Maties will play against WPCC on Saturday to decide the winner of the league. This past weekend Maties Women drew 2-2 against Somerset West, while Maties Men thrashed Fish Hoek 5-2.

Edwin Reed scored in his debut for Maties Men and Shannon Boucher, Daniel Bell, Luke Schooling and Keenan Horne scored the other goals. It was Bell’s last game of the season for Maties. He left for Belgium to play club hockey. He hopes to be back next season. This coming weekend will be the last time Dylan Swanepoel leads Maties, while striker Boucher will also play for the last time.

Women’s co-captain Quanita Bobbs scored both goals for her team. Bobbs might also be playing for the last time in the Maroon colours.

It will be an emotional day for sure with not only overall league glory on the line, but last time matches always bring with it lots of expectations. Both Maties teams are the defending champions. If Maties Men manage to win the league against undefeated WPCC it will be the first time since 2009 that the club would win both USSA and WPGC titles in one season.

Maties Women play at 15:00 and the men at 18:00. All matches are played at Hartleyvale.

Hy gaan nou in België klubhokkie speel.

Alle wedstryde is by Hartleyvale.
