BCom (Actuarial Sciences)

Admission requirements

This programme is the first step in the training of actuaries. One can describe Actuaries as independent professionals who are experts in analysing and modelling situations involving financial risk and contingent events. They are capable of assessing the risks involved and communicating what the results mean in financial terms. Their work directly involves managing assets and liabilities (such as investments and loans) and associated risks.

   The training of actuaries

To become an actuary (Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA)), you need to pass the 15 examinations of the professional body and have relevant work experience.

The University's BCom and BComHons in Actuarial Science programmes are structured in such a way that successful students can obtain an exemption from most of ASSA's examinations. Students need to achieve an appropriate mark in the corresponding university subject to get an exemption for any given subject. These programmes also prepare students thoroughly for some of the other external examinations for which no exemption is available.

In addition to covering the actuarial, statistical and mathematical material required to qualify as an actuary, the curriculums mentioned above also develop the ability to interpret and apply financial and economic data. These qualifications prepare you to play a vital role in the management of any enterprise or organisation.
