Part-time (4/8) Fixed-term Position

Working in partnership with Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation (OGRC), the African Wildlife Economy Institute (AWEI) aims to be the leading academic institute in Africa for research, teaching, and outreach on wildlife economies.

The study of wildlife economies is inherently multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. It includes the application of business management, economics, law, and science. The academic mandate of AWEI is to work across the faculties of Stellenbosch University, including AgriSciences (where it is located), Economic and Management Sciences, Law, and Science, and with universities across the continent. AWEI collaborates with research institutes and with public and private sector organisations across Africa.

The objective of the position is to further the mission of AWEI through:

  • The development and implementation of AWEI’s programmes; and
  • Ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation of AWEI’s impact through its Theory of Change.

The position is at 50% time but may be increased as duties and funding permit. The incumbent will report to the COO and the Director.

Duties:

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing multi-disciplinary AWEI programme and project plans that directly link to the overall strategy of the Institute;
  • Developing fundraising proposals for projects that contribute to AWEI’s Theory of Change through multidisciplinary research and engagement;
  • Oversight of and accountability for project implementation; 
  • Building and engaging with networks of researchers from all related disciplines to participate in project and programme multi-disciplinary implementation;
  • Coordinating outreach activities;
  • Project and programme reporting; and
  • Organisation level M&E, learning and impact reporting, developing, testing, and revising Theory of Change and impact assessment in delivering multidisciplinary approaches for conservation and inclusive economic outcomes.

Job Requirements:

  • Masters degree, with relevant experience in a wildlife economy-related field, e.g., conservation ecology, policy, law, finance, wildlife economics, or related field;
  • Africa-wide conservation-related experience;
  • Experience in multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to building wildlife economies;
  • At least three years’ experience in programme and project management;
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation;
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills; and
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
