Earthmind, a Swiss-based not-for-profit association, has provided critical inputs to the conceptualisation and development of AWEI. The journey began in 2015 with a multi-stakeholder workshop held in Pretoria to explore the economics of the wildlife ranching sector in South Africa. The meeting identified the need for a professional thinktank to support research and stakeholder engagement that would enhance policy and practice in the wildlife economic sector, not only in South Africa, but across the continent. Earthmind took the lead on consulting stakeholders from across Africa and beyond, conceptualising the focus and operations of the research institute, and securing a home for AWEI at Stellenbosch University. Since its start, Earthmind has continued to provide in-kind support including interim operations management and website development.
